Do CBD And THC Have Any Differences?

CBD and THC are the talking points of many people in the past few years. Both of them are cannabinoid compounds that are mainly found in plants of the Cannabis genus, mainly hemp and marijuana. CBD is mainly extracted from the hemp plant instead of marijuana because THC is still illegal in many states and only CBD products with less than 0.3 % of THC are allowed.

Today, millions of people around the world are benefitted from CBD products. People are now using CBD in the form of gels, oils, tinctures, topicals, edibles, etc. THC is not much used for alleviating any health problems because it is a psychoactive cannabinoid.

Here, we will take a look at some of the main differences between the two major cannabinoid compounds of the cannabis plant.

Difference In Chemical Structure

CBD and THC both have the same molecular structure with the same number of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms. Both these cannabinoid compounds have 2 oxygen atoms, 30 hydrogen atoms, and 21 carbon atoms. However, the arrangement of these atoms is different in these cannabinoids and that is why both of them provide different effects. Since both CBD and THC’s chemical structures are similar to the chemical structures of your body’s endocannabinoids, they can interact with the endocannabinoid receptors and provide many health benefits.

Difference In Legality

Both CBD and THC are present in the cannabis plant but their legal status is very different. Since hemp has been removed from the list of controlled substances, CBD derived from the hemp plant is legal on a federal level. However, THC is still illegal because it is mainly extracted from the marijuana plant which is on the list of controlled substances. However, more than 30 states in the US have passed cannabis-related laws that make medical cannabis legal. There are still some states that have not yet legalized CBD or THC even for medical purposes.

Difference In Health Benefits

Many studies have proven that both CBD and THC can provide a lot of medical benefits. Clinical studies are showing that these cannabinoids are helpful in alleviating pain, anxiety, seizures, etc. However, only CBD is generally accepted as a treatment option for health problems because of the psychoactive effects of THC. Also, THC may cause side effects and even get you high. Currently, the FDA has approved the use of a CBD-based medication for the treatment of Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.

The important thing you need to note is that CBD and THC have health benefits, but you should not buy CBD products that have more than 0.3 % THC.
