Anxiety is the body’s response to stressful situations. Anxiety triggers the fight or flight response that helps us to get out of tough situations. But when you are still feeling anxious in normal situations, you might be suffering from some sort of anxiety disorder and may need immediate medical attention.

Much like humans, dogs also suffer from anxiety that may lead to some serious health problems. Separation anxiety disorder is very common in dogs. Statistics show that around 17% of all the dogs in the world deal with separation anxiety. Dogs that have experienced physical or mental abuse are prone to specific phobias and fears.

Cause Of Anxiety In Dogs

Anxiety affects dogs in different ways.  The reasons for anxiety in dogs are either situational or behavioral. Dogs may experience anxiety during a thunderstorm, fireworks, or when they meet strangers or move into a new house. They also experience anxiety when they are separated from their owners. Old dogs may also experience anxiety in response to Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome.

Symptoms Of Anxiety In Dogs

The symptoms of anxiety in dogs are very different from humans. Different types of anxiety have different responses in different dogs. This makes it difficult to diagnose the condition.

Some common signs of anxiety in dogs are:

  • Pacing
  • Whining
  • Aggression
  • Barking

  • Fidgeting

Dogs with separation anxiety express destructive behavior. They may also urinate or defecate in the house, despite being potty trained.

  • Anti-social behavior

CBD For Treating Anxiety In Dogs

Cannabidiol, or commonly known as CBD, is proven to be an effective remedy for many of the health problems including anxiety disorders. The use of CBD for anxiety in humans is very popular around the world. Many scientific studies have shown that CBD is effective in treating post-traumatic stress disorder, general anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, etc.

Even though the research on the effect of CBD in treating anxiety in dogs is limited, many anecdotal records of the dog owners who gave CBD for their dogs to help them with anxiety showed positive results. Since, dogs also possess the endocannabinoid system like humans, the interaction of CBD with the ECS can reduce anxiety and stress in dogs.

CBD is a completely safe chemical compound. It does not cause any severe side effects or interfere with other medications. Therefore, you can safely give it to your dog. It is better to start at a smaller dosage or consult a veterinarian to determine a safe dosage of CBD for your dog.
